Quick Pick:

Americans saw communism as a bad thing. That was clear when Joseph McCarthy accused a number of workers of being associated with it. The Mcarthy accusations, the Red Scare and McCarthyism brought fear and terror to everyone. Propaganda was used to show what else communists have been doing. There was also a fear of being accused, for if one was accused he would be subject to aggressive investigations and numerous questionings by the government.

The government also used fear to bring up the taxes that it would later use to fund this incredibly expensive “race”. People were taxed a lot more once Eisenhower became president. This can be seen in Eisenhower’s spending on defense. All that money had to come from somewhere! Although people still didn’t like the idea of such high taxes, anyone who had a position in office kept their mouth shut, or else they would usually become a target of accusation. (We see here how history tends to repeat itself. These types of accusations were also seen during the Salem Witch Trials). In addition, the USSR was making more and more nukes and when it made one of its missile bases on Cuba, the possibility of a nuclear attack seemed all but unavoidable. These were some tough and tense times for Americans.

Communism worked its way through China, into the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, North Vietnam. This wasn’t something the US was comfortable with so they start another war which led to more wars. Generally, people were agaisnt the idea of fighting a war for an unseen cause. This is when the 50's and 60's turned into famous times. Hippies came about, supporting peace, love and unity. There also was a musical revolution that occurred where artists made songs written about going off to war to die for something that’s untrue. People felt very strongly about this, revolting, holding rallies, and enourmous concerts (Woodstock).

To this very day, America struggles with communist powers, and the American people are still strongly against communism. some even believe that we are heading towards a future filled with more problems and wars to do with it.
